For the past two years, I have volunteered for Google as a part of the Google Community Leaders Program. Through this experience, I have had the chance to combine my business knowledge and social work passion to give back to the Ann Arbor and Greater Detroit ommunity in the area of digital literacy. I have led many free workshops and one-on-one consultations for nonprofits to help better their digital presence. There are three experiences I would like to highlight: In addition, we are also creating video content on the program’s YouTube channel to make training more accessible. On October 20th, 2017, I led the team in hosting a free workshop on topics including Google AdWords, Google Analytics, YouTube, and Google My Business. This workshop was attended by 23 nonprofit organizations. Our team also invited Tom McPhee -- Executive Director of the World Animal Awareness Society -- as the guest speaker for the event due to his organization’s success in benefiting from free advertising support from Google. Through this experience, I learned that motivating does not always have to be done by me. For example, this workshop marks the highest attendance record for our team and it was due to Mr. McPhee’s ability to share his journey as a nonprofit leader and motivate the other organizations to reach out for help from us. A participant who attended the workshop said, “Please continue doing this. It's SO helpful to my nonprofit. I feel so much more confident in this area now that I know you guys are so interested in helping me figure this stuff out!” Through one of the workshops I have led, staff of the Girls Scouts Heart of Michigan had attended to receive digital marketing support. After chatting with the staff, we came to the conclusion of creating a STEM day for the Girl Scouts to visit the Google office and explore their interest in the field. On April 8th, 2017, 18 Girl Scouts and 5 parents and troop leaders participated in teamwork activities, in a panel of college STEM female students who worked in various companies and fields, and in a panel of current Google employees. The event went extremely well and help me built on my event planning ability while supporting a nonprofit. It was also extremely rewarding simply hearing the reactions of the parents. One parents referring to the panelists talking about staying competitive in male-dominated STEM fields, “Thank you so much for having this event. I love how much you talked about staying confident and engaging in subjects you enjoy even when you are doubted by others.” On February 5th, 2018, I travelled to Detroit and hosted a training on Gmail and Google Calendar for 23 asylum seekers at Freedom House along with 2 of my teammates. The aim of this workshop is to help asylum seekers better transition into the workforce. Google CLP Nonprofit Kickoff Workshop
