3D Printer for Hydrogels by James Doetsch

Professor Allen Liu of the Mechanical Engineering department and Professor Ariella Shikanov of the Biomedical Engineering department approached us to design and build a 3D printer to improve tissue engineering research which aims to develop fully functional organs. Successful tissue growth strongly depends on fast revascularization. This 3D printer will print a sacrificial structure as the framework for interconnected vascular networks that will be incorporated into cell-encapsulating hydrogel matrices. Without feeding media, or blood, from a supporting network, the internal cells of the organ will not survive, which is currently a limitation for our sponsors’ research. Our project aims to ultimately overcome this limitation.
